How it Works

Lately, I’ve been running out of ideas for blog posts. I’ve been running around doing random personal things like neglecting friends, neglecting obligations, and neglecting to fix things caused by me neglecting them. However, all of that is just busy work, and it’s time to confront the problem: I need original, creative ideas for this blog.

Luckily, we have Markov chains.

Oversimplified Markov Chains

Markov chains are mathematical models that go through states based on their probabilities.

For example, if you recorded a dog’s average day it’d be something like this:

Input:

  1. Wake up
  2. Eat
  3. Play
  4. Eat
  5. Poop
  6. Bark
  7. Play
  8. Eat
  9. Sleep

A Markov chain would record the probabilities of which states would be more likely to occur after each other.

‘Wake up’ occurs 100% of the time after ‘Sleep’. ‘Play’, ‘Poop’, or ‘Sleep’ are equally likely to occur after ‘Eat’. The dog will always ‘Eat’ after ‘Play’. All of these probabilities are what govern the Markov chain.

A Markov chain will start at one state and jump to the next most likely state, creating a realistic dog’s day.

Output:

  1. Wake up
  2. Eat
  3. Sleep
  4. Wake up
  5. Eat
  6. Poop
  7. Bark
  8. Play
  9. Eat
  10. etc…

Markov chains have no memory of what they’re doing. In the case of the Markov chain used to generate a dog’s day, it only sees one word and has no further memory. If you tried analyzing the super-small dataset character-by-character you would get this:

Output:

  1. Play
  2. Slee
  3. Pop
  4. Bay
  5. Eark
  6. Slar
  7. Eake
  8. Eay
  9. Ear
  10. etc…?

It takes considerably more data for a Markov chain to learn words, thus the power of a Markov chain depends on how much data is available.

Markov chains that build with larger chunks (e.g. a chain that creates a dog’s day in 3-word chunks) will probably overfit much more often.

Armed with the power of a memoryless, simple, and stupid algorithm, I was able to generate the above idea list within a couple minutes with word-by-word analysis. If I had spent more time increasing my dataset and formatting it to be consistent, I would’ve been able to create even better results.
